Every year, ministry leaders ask the same question:
"What's actually working in young adult ministry right now?"
Not the latest social media trend.

To answer that question, we surveyed 113 young adult ministry leaders from across churches of every size and stage.
Some ministries are just launching.
Others reach hundreds of young adults every week.
While every church is unique, several clear themes emerged.
These aren't predictions.
They're observations from leaders on the front lines of ministry.
Here are the seven biggest trends shaping young adult ministry in 2026.
1. Young Adult Ministry Is Growing—But It's Still Emerging
Perhaps the biggest surprise from the survey wasn't growth.
It was how young most ministries still are.
Only 5.3% of ministries described themselves as "sustaining."
Nearly 80% said they were either starting, strengthening, scaling, or rebuilding.
That means young adult ministry isn't an established ministry in most churches.
It's still being built.
The opportunity has never been greater.
The challenge is helping ministries become sustainable for the long haul.

2. Young Adults Aren't Bored with the Bible—They're Bored with Shallow Christianity
One response appeared over and over again.
Leaders aren't seeing young adults ask for less teaching.
They're asking for better teaching.
Survey responses repeatedly mentioned:
deeper discipleship
biblical truth
spiritual disciplines
authentic theology
practical application
The stereotype says Gen Z has a short attention span.
Reality says they have a short attention span for things that lack substance.
Young adults aren't looking for entertainment.
They're looking for transformation.
3. Growth Is Outpacing Leadership Development
Nearly half of ministries described themselves as:
"Growing, but fragile."
That's incredibly revealing.
Young adults are showing up.
But many ministries admitted they don't yet have enough leaders, volunteers, or systems to sustain that growth.
Attendance is growing faster than leadership.
Healthy ministries develop leaders before they desperately need them.
4. Community Has Become the New Front Door
When asked what keeps young adults engaged...
The answer wasn't preaching.
It wasn't production.
It wasn't worship.
It was community.
75% identified relationships as the number one factor keeping young adults connected.
Young adults aren't just looking for a place to attend.
They're looking for a place to belong.
Community isn't an accessory.
It's the ministry.
5. Young Adult Pastors Need More Support
Behind every thriving ministry is usually a leader carrying an enormous amount of responsibility.
Many survey responses mentioned:
limited staff
bi-vocational ministry
burnout
lack of volunteers
limited budgets
little church-wide support
Yet despite those realities...
Most leaders remain remarkably hopeful.

6. Young Adult Ministry Has Become More Relational Than Programmatic
One of the clearest themes throughout the survey was this:
Programs matter less than people.
The ministries seeing the most momentum consistently described:
small groups
mentorship
one-on-one discipleship
meals together
honest conversations
authentic community
The future isn't built around better events.
It's built around better relationships.
7. Churches Are Waking Up to the Strategic Importance of Young Adult Ministry
For years, young adult ministry often felt overlooked.
That's beginning to change.
Churches increasingly recognize that the years between 18 and 30 are some of the most formative years of life.
During this season people make major decisions about:
faith
marriage
career
calling
finances
friendships
church involvement
These aren't simply "college years."
