Here’s What Young Adult Ministry is NOT

What exactly is young adult ministry? Before we answer that, it’s important to clear up a few common misconceptions. Too often, people think of young adult ministry as an add-on, a rerun, or just a place to hang out—but that couldn’t be further from the truth. If we’re going to reach the next generation with the gospel, we need to understand what young adult ministry is not.

1. Young adult ministry is not a church within a church.

YA isn’t meant to be its own thing. We are here to help young adults within the larger church, not build a separate one. God commands a blessing where there is unity (see Psalm 133:1). Division starts when there is a divide in vision or separate visions.

2. Young adult ministry is not youth group 2.0.

This isn’t a repeat of high school! Young Adult ministry is about taking ownership of your faith and walk with Jesus in the real world. At school, in college, at work, and in relationships. With adulting being harder now more than ever before - we have an opportunity to answer questions a generation is actually asking, come alongside them as guides, and provide practical next steps closer towards Jesus.

3. Young adult ministry is not a social club.

This is not just a hangout spot. The church was built on prayer, teaching, and mission. You will find friends here, but this community is about becoming more like Jesus and living on purpose together.

If this resonates with you, don’t keep it to yourself—share it with your church staff, board, or team.
